Celebrate A Healthy Smile on National Brush Day

National Brush Day 2019

It’s no coincidence that National Brush Day is observed annually on November 1st, the day after Halloween, which traditionally is the single most significant day of candy consumption in the United States.

National Brush Day is part of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign, a national initiative launched by The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives and the Ad Council in 2012.

It aims to help parents and caregivers understand why poor dental health can have serious consequences, and about simple ways in which they can help improve their children’s oral health and prevent dental disease.

The campaign aims to motivate parents to take action to reduce their children’s risk of oral disease by making sure their kids are brushing their teeth for two minutes, twice a day.

Check Your Brushing Technique

Do you brush your teeth the right way?

It may sound crazy but a lot of us don’t. According to MouthHealthy.org, proper brushing technique is to:

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

Of course, brushing your teeth is only part of a complete dental care routine. Don’t forget to floss daily, eat a balanced diet, and visit your dentist on the regular.

4 Ways To Celebrate National Brush Day

  1. Snap & share “brushing selfies” on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – use the hashtag #NationalBrushDay & tag us!
  2. Make it a family event, download this checklist and time yourselves using these 2-minute videos to watch with your kids while brushing your teeth together.
  3. Choose a 2-minute tune & brush your teeth to music.
  4. Download the Toothsavers app to gamify your 2x daily brushing.

The simple act of brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes can have a substantial impact on cavity prevention as well as a myriad of oral diseases such as gingivitis.

According to the ADA, since the campaign’s launch in 2012, more than 2.7 million people have visited 2min2x.org and a series of public service announcements have received more than $100 million in donated media.

An Ad Council survey showed that since October 2014, parents reported that their children were significantly more likely to brush twice a day and significantly more likely to brush for two minutes each time.
