3 Simple Tips for a Healthy Looking Smile
A Little Smile Maintenance Goes a Long Way
Maintaining a healthy smile is easy, and can even save you money at the dentist. All it takes is some super simple – but consistent – dental hygiene habits to keep your kisser in tip top shape.
A diligent daily dental hygiene regimen along with some preventative dentistry is the first ingredient toward keeping a beaming & bright, healthy looking smile.
Why Is Dental Hygiene So Important?
Because we can avoid major treatment plans that cost significantly more than preventative dentistry – seeing your dentist on the regular.
Adults over 35 lose more teeth to gum diseases (periodontal disease) than from cavities, and three out of four adults are affected at some time in their life.
Furthermore, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontal disease has been linked to other overall health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, dementia, psoriasis, Alzheimers…and more overall health conditions that we’re just beginning to understand and study in-depth.
The best way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease is by adhering to a daily dental hygiene regimen of brushing & flossing, complemented with a regular dose of preventative dentistry.
For a healthy smile, consider following these three simple steps:
1. Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day
For optimal effect, you should be brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a pop.
This is something we learn as kids, but you’d be surprised how many of us either rush through the process or skip it altogether….ewwwww!
For best results:
- Use a soft-bristle toothbrush.
- Brush your teeth for 2 mins, 2x a day.
- Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including along your gumline.
2. Floss Every Day
Brushing is key, but flossing is also extremely important to maintaining a healthy smile.
You need to floss because if you don’t, the plaque and leftover food particles get trapped just underneath your gumline and between your teeth.
Just like visiting your dentist for regular checkups & cleanings complements how you take care of your teeth & gums at home, proper flossing sweeps up any leftovers that brushing missed.
And nobody wants those kinds of leftovers!
3. Schedule Regular Teeth Cleanings and Dental Checkups
We encourage all of our patients to visit us once every six months for preventive dentistry checkup, exam, & teeth cleaning.
Typically we perform a simple check of your mouth for any signs of decay, disease, or abnormalities, in addition to performing an oral cancer screening.
Along with daily brushing and flossing, these preventative dentistry visits catch any possible warning signs before they turn into full blown problems – requiring significant treatment, at a higher cost than a simple checkup, exam, screening & cleaning.
So there you have it, three simple keys to maintaining a health smile…from age 1 to 100+!
